Belmont Preparatory High School

500 EAST FORDHAM ROAD

At a Glance

A tightly-screened high school in the Belmont neighborhood where teacher-rated instruction quality hits 100% and nearly 1,600 families compete for just 86 seats

Best suited for

Families who value a small, structured environment with demonstrated teacher excellence and strong family-school partnerships — and who are prepared for a competitive screened admissions process. Parents comfortable with the reality of the surrounding neighborhood's safety challenges, and who want a school where their child won't get lost in a large population, will find this fits. Those seeking extensive athletic programs or looking for a school with published proof of academic proficiency may want to look elsewhere.

What stands out
  • Screened admissions with extreme demand — 5.6% offer rate indicates highly competitive entry
  • 100% teacher-rated instruction quality — every teacher surveyed rates teaching as excellent
  • Zero suspensions — discipline record far exceeds district average of 0.28%
  • Very high family-school trust — 95% parent-principal trust and 93% parent-teacher trust
  • Small school feel with 391 students across four grades
Things to consider
  • No published state test scores means you cannot compare proficiency directly to other schools
  • Extremely low safety score in the surrounding neighborhood (2.3 percentile) — parents should factor this into daily logistics
  • Small enrollment (391) means limited sports teams and extracurricular breadth compared to larger schools
  • Only 24 teacher survey responses — the 100% instruction quality score comes from a small sample
  • The 5.6% acceptance rate means most applicants will be rejected — this isn't a backup option

School SummaryDistrict 10

Among peer schools in District 10, Belmont Preparatory doesn't have comparative scoring data since proficiency metrics weren't provided. The peer list includes schools rated from 62-92, showing District 10 has both higher and lower performers. What distinguishes this school is its extraordinary demand (5.6% offer rate) and its culture metrics, which suggest a tightly-run ship with strong leadership trust — factors that don't always show up in test scores.

AcademicsSteady

The school lacks published state test proficiency data, making it difficult to directly compare academic performance against the district's 45% ELA and 43.5% Math averages. However, the 100% teacher-rated instruction quality score is extraordinary — it exceeds the district average of 91.4% by a significant margin and suggests strong classroom execution. The school offers AP Courses and a Humanities program, providing academic rigor for college-bound students despite the lack of transparent proficiency metrics.

Culturestrong

The culture here is defined by extraordinary trust and zero disciplinary incidents. Every single surveyed teacher rated instruction quality at 100%, and parent-principal trust hits 95% — remarkably high for any school. The school reports zero suspensions, dramatically below the district average of 0.28%. Family survey response rates are healthy at 51%, indicating strong parent engagement with the school community. With 93% parent satisfaction and 94% teacher-principal trust, the day-to-day feel appears to be one of mutual respect between families, teachers, and leadership.

Community

This is a predominantly Hispanic school — 69% of students — reflecting the demographics of Belmont, where the neighborhood is largely working-class and immigrant families. Black students make up 23%, with minimal Asian (3%) and White (3%) enrollment. The diversity index sits at 50%, moderate for the Bronx. With 86.8% economic need and 23% IEP students, the population includes significant numbers of students with special needs and those facing economic hardship. Yet this screened school draws families willing to navigate a competitive admissions process.

NeighborhoodBelmont

Belmont is a working-class neighborhood in the Bronx with significant challenges. The median household income is just $32,956, and 37.7% of residents live below the poverty line. Safety scores are very low (2.3 percentile), which is a genuine concern for families. Transit access is decent (58.62 percentile), and family density is moderate (55.56 percentile). However, the education orientation score is low at 22.22 percentile, suggesting this isn't a neighborhood where families prioritize schools as a primary reason for living here. The homeownership rate is extremely low at 3.8%, indicating a largely renting population.

The school sits along Fordham Road, a major commercial corridor with good bus access. Families from across the Bronx and beyond apply here, meaning many students commute significant distances rather than walking from the immediate neighborhood.
