School SummaryDistrict 14
Among District 14 peer schools — which include several highly-ranked Success Academy charters and P.S. 031 and P.S. 034 — this high school doesn't have a comparable quality rating. The peer list includes elementary schools, making direct comparison difficult. What we know: this school has stronger parent satisfaction than the district average (99% vs 94%), similar class sizes, and notably better discipline outcomes.
Academic performance data was not provided for this school, making it difficult to assess how students are performing against district benchmarks. The school offers AP courses, and the district averages for District 14 show 62% ELA and 59% math proficiency. Parents should ask about recent test scores during school visits since they're not included in this data.
The survey data tells a nuanced story. Families love this school — 99% parent satisfaction and 95-96% trust scores for teachers and principal are exceptional. Teachers report strong collegial trust (82%) and solid instruction quality (91%). However, teacher-principal trust sits at 70%, notably below other dimensions — a gap worth understanding during a school visit. The school had zero suspensions last year, which is notably better than the district average of 0.56%. The family survey response rate was only 6% (28 responses), so take satisfaction numbers with a small grain of salt.
The student body is predominantly Hispanic (74%) with significant Black enrollment (18%), reflecting the neighborhood's changing demographics. With an economic need index of 90.3% — meaning nearly all students qualify for free or reduced lunch — this is a high-need school. Nearly one in five students (18%) has an IEP. The diversity index of 44% is moderate. This is a working-class school serving students who face significant economic challenges.
East Williamsburg sits in northern Brooklyn, historically an industrial area transformed by artists and young professionals. The neighborhood scores poorly on family-friendliness metrics — only 9.2% of households have children, the lowest among comparable areas. Transit access is decent (61st percentile), but safety scores are low (43rd percentile), with elevated asthma rates and lead exposure concerns. Home values have skyrocketed to a median of $1,048,275, yet only 12.5% of residents own homes — this is a predominantly renter population. The neighborhood has an artsy, transient feel.
The school is on Grand Street, well-served by multiple bus lines and near the Bedford Ave L train stop. Families walking or taking transit will find it accessible, though the neighborhood isn't designed around families with young children.
