Fordham High School for the Arts

500 EAST FORDHAM ROAD

At a Glance

A highly selective arts magnet school where nearly all families report feeling heard — but test scores remain a question mark

Best suited for

Families who value the arts and want a small, selective environment with extremely high family engagement. Students auditioning for dance, drama, music, or visual arts will find a deep program and a supportive community. Parents should be comfortable with the neighborhood's safety realities and may need to supplement where PTA funding falls short. This is NOT the school for families seeking transparent, high-stakes academic data or a traditional STEM-focused curriculum — the arts are clearly the draw here.

What stands out
  • Audition-based admissions creating a selective, motivated student body
  • 99% parent satisfaction and near-universal family trust in leadership
  • Zero suspensions — unusually strong discipline record
  • Extremely competitive admissions (9% offer rate, 970 applicants for 86 seats)
  • Full spectrum arts program: dance, drama, musical theater, vocal/instrumental music, visual arts, technical theater
  • Rich extracurriculars including JROTC, National Honor Society, Poetry Club, and Yearbook
  • Strong support for diverse learners: 24% IEP population and ELL services
Things to consider
  • No state test proficiency data published — academic outcomes are difficult to verify
  • Teacher-reported instruction quality (83%) falls below the district average (91%)
  • Very low PTA fundraising ($2 per student vs. $74 district average) may limit extracurricular funding
  • Safety concerns in the neighborhood are real — low safety percentile score and elevated crime density
  • Small teacher survey sample (29 responses) makes some climate metrics less reliable
  • Arts-focused curriculum may not suit students seeking a strictly academic or STEM track

School SummaryDistrict 10

Among District 10 peer schools, Fordham High School for the Arts stands out for its selectivity and family satisfaction — metrics that don't appear in the peer school rankings shown. The peer comparison list focuses on elementary and K-8 schools, making direct academic comparisons difficult. The 90/100 program richness score signals strong offerings across arts, academics, athletics, and languages. The main challenge: without proficiency data, it's hard to position academically against the district's other options.

AcademicsLimited data

State test proficiency data isn't provided, so we can't directly compare this school's academic performance to the district's 45% ELA and 44% Math averages. What we do know: the school offers AP courses and a robust Regents Academy, and maintains an average class size of 22.9 — identical to the district average. The program richness score of 90/100 suggests strong academic offerings, but without proficiency data, parents are flying somewhat blind on academic outcomes.

Culturestrong

The survey data here is remarkable. Parents report near-universal satisfaction (99%), and trust in both teachers and the principal hits the same high mark — an unusually strong alignment. Teachers report 91% collegial trust and 82% trust in leadership, though teacher-rated instruction quality (83%) sits below the district average of 91%. With zero suspensions and 100% family survey response rate, the school has clearly built a culture where families feel engaged and heard. The day-to-day feel appears collaborative and trusting, though teacher instruction quality may be an area to watch.

Community

With 61% Hispanic and 31% Black students, the school mirrors Belmont's predominantly Latino community. The diversity index of 53% reflects a school that's culturally unified but not monolithic. Notably, 24% of students have IEPs — slightly higher than many District 10 peers — suggesting the school supports a meaningful population of students with special needs. At 396 students across four grades, it's a mid-sized high school that feels personal.

NeighborhoodBelmont

Belmont is a dense, transit-accessible neighborhood in the central Bronx — home to the famous Arthur Avenue retail market and a mix of family-owned businesses. The area has a low homeownership rate (3.8%) and high poverty (38%), but also shows stability (68%) and decent transit options. Families should know the neighborhood scores poorly on safety (2.3 percentile) and has elevated asthma rates and lead exposure risks — environmental health factors that matter for families with young children or sensitivities.

Belmont is pedestrian-friendly and well-served by the Bx12 bus and nearby Metro-North. Many students walk or take public transit from surrounding blocks.
