Fordham Leadership Academy

500 EAST FORDHAM ROAD

At a Glance

A highly selective leadership academy in the Belmont neighborhood where families report exceptional trust in teachers and principals, though teacher-rated instruction quality lags district averages

Best suited for

Families seeking a small, selective high school with strong family engagement and a discipline-free environment may find this school appealing. The profile is best suited for parents who value parent-principal trust and are comfortable with a school where teachers appear less confident in leadership than families do. Given the competitive admissions and high economic need population, families should ask specifically about how the school supports both high-achieving students and the 29% receiving special education services.

What stands out
  • Zero suspensions in a district where peer schools average 0.28%
  • Exceptional parent trust scores — 97% for teachers and principal
  • Highly competitive admissions — only 7.1% of applicants receive offers
  • Small school feel with 414 students across 4 grades
  • Offers unique languages including Japanese and American Sign Language
  • 98% family survey response rate indicates strong parental engagement
Things to consider
  • Teacher-reported instruction quality (79%) falls below the district average (91.4%)
  • Only 8 teachers responded to the survey — very low response raises questions about staff sentiment
  • No ELA or Math proficiency data provided — academic performance difficult to assess
  • 29% IEP population is high — ensure your child will receive appropriate supports
  • Neighborhood safety scores are very low (2.3 percentile)
  • School sits in an area with elevated lead and asthma rates — health environment concerns

School SummaryDistrict 10

Among District 10 peer schools, Fordham Leadership Academy does not have a comparable quality score to benchmark against. The district includes high performers like P.S. 024 Spuyten Duyvil (92/100) and P.S. 081 Robert J. Christen (88/100), as well as lower-scoring options. Without test score data, the school's academic positioning is unclear, but the survey disparities between families and teachers suggest internal tensions that parents should investigate during a tour.

AcademicsSteady

Test score data was not provided, but the school offers AP Courses alongside Humanities, STEM, and World Languages including Japanese and American Sign Language. The program richness score of 66.2/100 indicates moderate academic offerings. With 29% of students receiving special education services — well above typical district averages — the school serves a significant population with learning needs.

Culturemoderate

The survey results present a striking contrast. Parents report 97% satisfaction and 97% trust in both teachers and principals — numbers that would be exceptional in any district. Teachers, however, tell a different story: only 79% rate instruction quality positively, and just 72% trust the principal. Teacher collegial trust is stronger at 88%, but the low teacher survey response rate (only 8 responses) makes it hard to draw firm conclusions about staff sentiment. On the positive side, the school recorded zero suspensions — a notable achievement in a district where the average suspension rate is about 0.28%. Attendance data was not provided.

Community

With 72% Hispanic and 23% Black students, the school's demographics closely mirror the Belmont neighborhood, which has a 13.1% college-educated adult population and 37.7% poverty rate. The economic need index of 90.8% indicates nearly all students qualify for free or reduced lunch. At 414 students across four grades plus special education, the school is small to mid-sized. The diversity index of 42% reflects a predominantly Hispanic student body.

NeighborhoodBelmont

Belmont is a densely populated, transit-accessible neighborhood in the central Bronx with a young, renter-heavy population. Only 3.8% of residents own homes, and 37.7% live below the poverty line. The neighborhood scores very low on safety (2.3/100 percentile) with high crime density and collision rates. Environmental health concerns are notable — lead elevation rates reach 15.2% and asthma emergency department visits average 75.5 per 1,000 residents. However, the area scores well on transit (58.62) and stability (67.82).

Belmont is highly walkable and well-served by public transit, with several bus lines and proximity to the B/D subway lines. Families from across the Bronx and Manhattan can access the school without a car, though the neighborhood's safety concerns may factor into how younger students commute.
