George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences

143-10 SPRINGFIELD BOULEVARD

At a Glance

A small, specialized science high school in southeastern Queens with strong family trust scores but no available test score data to measure academic progress

Best suited for

Families prioritizing a small-school environment with strong family-teacher relationships and a science focus — particularly those interested in veterinary or research pathways. Parents should be comfortable with the lack of public test score data and willing to navigate transportation, as the location has limited transit options.

What stands out
  • Zero suspensions — significantly below the 0.94% district average
  • Two specialized science institutes (Veterinary Science and Carver Research) with competitive admissions
  • Small enrollment (354 students) enabling more personalized attention
  • High teacher instruction quality (93% vs 88% district average)
  • Strong family trust scores (91-93% across satisfaction, teacher trust, and principal trust)
  • Extensive athletics program with 13 sports offerings
Things to consider
  • No test score data available — parents cannot assess academic proficiency compared to district averages
  • Low survey response rates (16% families, 29 teachers) may not fully represent community sentiment
  • Low transit accessibility means car dependency for most families
  • School lacks a formal quality rating since data is incomplete
  • Smaller enrollment may mean fewer course offerings or extracurricular depth than larger schools

School SummaryDistrict 29

George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences sits in District 29, where peer schools include highly-rated charter options (Success Academy Springfield Gardens at 95/100, Success Academy Rosedale at 91/100) and several elementary schools. Without test score data, it's difficult to position this school academically against these peers. However, its zero-suspension record, small size, and specialized science focus give it a distinct identity within the district — particularly for families seeking a tighter-knit community with strong trust metrics.

AcademicsSteady

Test score data is not provided for this school, preventing direct comparison with the district's 57% ELA and 54% math proficiency averages. The school offers AP Courses and maintains a STEM-focused program through its Veterinary Science Institute and Carver Research Institute, both of which draw significant applicant interest (235-265 applicants for 46 seats each). The program richness score of 78.6/100 indicates robust course offerings, though the lack of proficiency data means parents cannot easily gauge how well students are mastering grade-level content.

Culturemoderate

The school's climate data reveals exceptionally strong trust between families and staff: 91% parent satisfaction, 92% parent-teacher trust, and 93% parent-principal trust all hover near or slightly below the district averages. Teacher instruction quality scores 93%, outpacing the district average of 88%, suggesting strong classroom practice. Teacher-principal trust (87%) and collegial trust (82%) are solid though slightly lower, indicating some backend tension among staff. Perhaps most notably, the school recorded zero suspensions — well below the district average of 0.94% — suggesting either very effective behavior management or very different disciplinary standards. The family survey response rate of 16% is low, meaning these strong numbers reflect a subset of engaged families.

Community

The student body is predominantly Black (64%) with significant Hispanic representation (20%), reflecting the demographics of Springfield Gardens. With 67.7% economic need and 18% IEP students, the population has higher needs than average. The diversity index of 57% is moderate, and the school is notably small at 354 students — class sizes average 23.1, matching the district average but with far fewer total students, which can mean more individualized attention.

NeighborhoodSpringfield Gardens (North)-Rochdale Village

Springfield Gardens is a southeastern Queens neighborhood with a median home value of $385,841 and homeownership rate of 37.3%, suggesting a working-to-middle-class community. The poverty rate is relatively low at 11.3%, though 67.7% of students qualify for free lunch, indicating the school draws from families with higher economic need than the surrounding neighborhood might suggest. Safety scores at 60.92 are moderate, while health environment scores 85.06 — notably strong. Transit access scores low at 37.16, meaning most families will drive or walk.

With low transit scores, most families likely drive or carpool. The Springfield Gardens location means walking is feasible for nearby residents but less practical for those coming from further afield.
