School SummaryDistrict 13
George Westinghouse is the only CTE high school in District 13 and operates differently from the zoned elementary and middle schools that dominate the peer list. Direct comparisons are difficult since peer schools include P.S. 011 Purvis J. Behan (96/100), The Emily Warren Roebling School (91/100), and several charter schools. The school occupies a unique niche as a screened CTE option serving students from across Brooklyn.
Academic performance data was not available in this dataset. The school offers AP Courses and ELL Support alongside its career and technical programs. Class sizes average 21.2 students, matching the district average exactly.
The school's culture stands out for its exceptional family trust metrics: 93% parent-teacher trust and 91% parent-principal trust both exceed district averages. Teacher-reported instruction quality sits at 77%, which is below the district average of 87.6%, suggesting potential areas for professional development. Teacher-principal trust at 65% indicates some tension between staff and leadership that parents may want to investigate further. The most striking feature is discipline: zero suspensions in a district where the average is 1.4%, pointing to either very different disciplinary approaches or reporting practices.
The student body is predominantly Black (65%) and Hispanic (28%), with very small Asian (3%), White (2%), and Multi-Racial (1%) populations. Nearly 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and 24% have IEPs — reflecting a population with significant support needs. This demographic profile contrasts sharply with the surrounding neighborhood, where median household income exceeds $150,000 and 73% of residents have bachelor's degrees. The diversity index of 50% is moderate, though the school's enrollment is far less economically diverse than the neighborhood it calls home.
Downtown Brooklyn-DUMBO-Boerum Hill is a high-density urban core with exceptional transit access (98th percentile) and strong education orientation (85th percentile). The area offers numerous parks and family amenities, though safety scores are modest (21st percentile). With median home values exceeding $1.4 million and only 16% of households having children, this is a professional, affluent neighborhood undergoing continued development. The school's Tech Place location places students in the heart of Brooklyn's commercial and institutional center.
The school is highly accessible by subway given the neighborhood's 98th percentile transit score. Families driving should expect urban traffic and limited parking. The area is very walkable with good infrastructure, though the student population comes from farther afield given the specialized CTE programs.
