At a Glance
A tiny public elementary in the South Bronx where nearly every child reads at grade level and suspensions don't happen
Best suited for
Families in the South Bronx — especially in Melrose and nearby Mott Haven — who want a small, unscreened public elementary through middle experience with high academic expectations, a no-suspension culture, and very tight family-school trust, and who are comfortable navigating a neighborhood without high levels of homeownership or BA-degree density.
Overall Rating
Rating = average of NY State ELA + math proficiency, grades 3–8
Bands are Motley's thresholds on a 0–100 scale, not New York State performance levels.
How this is scored→What stands out
- Zero suspensions sustained across three consecutive school years — a rare feat in any NYC public school
- ELA proficiency near 99% and math proficiency over 94%, roughly double the District 7 average
- 100% of teachers report strong relationships, with 100% teacher-principal trust and 98% collegial trust
- Exceptional family engagement, with an 88% response rate on surveys and 97% parent satisfaction
- A dramatic rebound from the 2022 academic dip to near-perfect proficiency in 2024-2025
Things to consider
- Teacher-reported safety of 71% sits below the district average of 80.5% — worth asking the principal what that reflects and how it's being addressed
- Only 22 teachers completed the survey, which is a small voice for staff and gives those numbers more uncertainty
- PTA fundraising of just $3 per student signals limited family financial flexibility, which can affect enrichment programs and field trips
- Enrollment is small (about 246 students), which can mean closer relationships but also fewer grade-level peers and a narrower athletics/social mix than larger schools
- Some historical score volatility (especially the 2022 dip) suggests results aren't guaranteed every year even though the recent trend is strong
Based on 2024-25 data
School SummaryDistrict 7
Among District 7 schools, this school is a clear standout: its overall rating of 3.87/4 is well above the district average of about 2.0/4 and puts it in conversation with top charter peers like South Bronx Classical Charter School II and Success Academy Bronx 1, which is notable given that this is an unscreened public school rather than a lottery-based charter.
Academics
ELA proficiency of 98.9% and math proficiency of 94.4% are extraordinary when set against the District 7 averages of roughly 51% and 49% — essentially double. By grade, 3rd graders hit 100% in both subjects, 4th graders hit 100% ELA and 95.8% math, and 5th graders hit 100% ELA and 88.5% math. The school's overall rating of 3.87/4 sits well above the district average of about 2.0/4. The historical trend, though, tells a more textured story: scores dipped noticeably in 2019 and again in 2022 (math fell to 54.2%), but the school has rebounded sharply, hitting nearly perfect marks in 2024 and 2025.
Culture
Family-side survey results are as positive as you'll find in any NYC public school — 97% parent satisfaction, 97% trust in both teachers and the principal, and a perfect 100% on strong relationships, with an unusually high 88% family response rate. Teachers also report very high confidence in instruction quality (96%) and in their principal (100%) and in one another (98%). The one soft spot is teacher-reported safety at 71%, meaningfully below the district average of about 80.5%; this is worth asking about, especially since the broader chronic absenteeism figure provided (92.9%) is unusually high relative to a 97.6% attendance rate and may reflect a data anomaly. Discipline is a clear strength: zero suspensions in 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24.
Community
The 246-student body is 70% Hispanic and 27% Black, closely mirroring the Melrose neighborhood around it, which has a 38.1% poverty rate and median household income around $30,236. Twenty-one percent of students have IEPs, and the economic need index of 83.4 confirms a deeply working-class population. The PTA raised just $3 per student last year — far below the district average of about $10 — which usually reflects tight family budgets rather than disengagement, especially given the 88% family survey response rate.
Neighborhood
Melrose is a predominantly renter neighborhood in the South Bronx where about 15.7% of households have children, median household income sits near $30,236, and roughly 38% of residents live below the poverty line. Bachelor's-degree attainment is 13.9%, well below city norms, and only about 10% of housing is owner-occupied. For families considering this school, the picture is one of a tight-knit, working-class community where school choice matters a great deal.
Three subway options within roughly 5 to 11 minutes: Jackson Avenue (2 and 5 trains) is about a 5-minute walk, 3 Avenue-149 Street (2 and 5) about 7 minutes, and East 149 Street (6 train) about 11 minutes.

Pre-K
Leaders of Excellence, Advocacy and Discovery also has Pre-K classes. They're a separate application from kindergarten, made on MySchools.
Pre-K application
Applications typically open in the winter and close in the spring, with offers in late spring; the city announces exact dates each year.
Kindergarten
District 7 is a school-choice district, so it has no elementary zones: no address guarantees a seat at Leaders of Excellence, Advocacy and Discovery. Families across the district apply on MySchools, and seats go to priority groups first (siblings, then families in the school's area — District 7 is split into a north and a south area), then by random lottery.

Middle school is one citywide application, made in 5th grade. We don't have Leaders of Excellence, Advocacy and Discovery's program list, so read how each of its programs admits on MySchools before you rank it.
