School SummaryDistrict 2

Among District 2 peers like P.S. 77 Lower Lab (99/100) and Success Academy charters (95-96/100), this school doesn't appear in the top-tier comparison set. But that's partly because it's a high school serving a very different population — 85.6% economic need versus the district's more affluent averages. The 7.1% acceptance rate actually makes it more selective than many of those top-performing elementary schools. In the Manhattan unscreened arts high school landscape, it's a standout for demand but operates with more constraints than the exam schools.

AcademicsSteady

No state test scores were available for this school, which is notable given that district averages show 73% ELA and 73% Math proficiency. What we do know: teachers rate instruction quality at 96% — well above the district average of 90% — and the school offers structured academic support including after-school tutoring and ELL services. With 29% of students receiving special education services and a heavy Hispanic population (58%), this is a school where academic progress likely requires extra scaffolding rather than acceleration.

Cultureconcerning

The culture here reads as genuinely positive on the teacher side — 96% say instruction quality is high, and 89% trust the principal. But look at the response rates: only 26 teachers completed surveys (26% response) and 64 families responded (26% family response rate). That's extremely low for a school of 338 students, which means we're hearing from a self-selected group. Parent satisfaction (83%) trails the district average (92%), suggesting some families have reservations. The zero-suspension environment is a real strength — this is a school where behavioral issues are managed through relationships, not exclusions.

Community

This student body is distinctive: 58% Hispanic, 31% Black, 8% Asian, and only 3% white — reflecting the neighborhood's demographic shift away from its historically white, Jewish, and Italian roots toward a predominantly Latino and Asian community. With 85.6% economic need and 29% IEP students, this is a high-need population that the arts and athletics programs clearly serve as a unifying force. The diversity index of 56% is moderate, but the cultural cohesion around arts programming is clearly a draw — the 7.1% offer rate means this school is rejecting roughly 9 out of 10 applicants.

NeighborhoodLower East Side

The Lower East Side is a study in contrasts: transit score of 88.51 (excellent) but safety score of only 16.09 (very low). The neighborhood has an education orientation of 89.27 — meaning families here prioritize schooling — but a poverty rate of 23.1% and median household income of $58,035, well below Manhattan norms. There's a lead elevated rate of 8.7% and high asthma rates (155 per 10,000), environmental health concerns that parents should factor in. On the plus side: 89.27 education orientation means you're surrounded by families who care about schools, and the median home value of $833,574 suggests many families are stretching to live here for the schools.

The neighborhood is extremely walkable and transit-connected (88.51 score), but parents should consider the safety context — the area has elevated crime density. Many students likely walk or take the subway.
