How this is scored→What stands out
- Math proficiency just crossed above the district average — unusual for a zoned Bronx elementary and a big jump from prior years.
- Teacher-rated instruction quality hit 100% on the 2025 survey, a rare score worth flagging.
- Zero suspensions in each of the last three reported years, despite serving a large inclusion population.
- Family engagement is exceptional: 98% survey response rate and 99% parent satisfaction.
- Special education enrollment of 22% signals a genuine commitment to full inclusion.
Things to consider
- ELA proficiency at 30.1% is still well below the district average of ~45% — math is ahead, reading is not yet.
- Chronic absenteeism at 61.8% means a typical classroom has many kids who miss a quarter or more of the year.
- Only 77% of teachers describe the school as safe, below the district norm — worth asking directly about.
- The overall quality score (1.59/4) sits below the district average (1.79/4), and several peer schools in District 9 — including Icahn and Success Academy branches — post higher ratings.
- Large school (829 students) means your child's class and teacher relationships will matter a lot.
Based on 2024-25 data
School SummaryDistrict 9
P.S. 070 lands below District 9's average overall quality score and well below its top-rated charter peers, but it outperforms many zoned peers on recent math gains and on parent and teacher survey measures. It belongs to the second tier of District 9 elementary schools — not a crown jewel, but clearly on the rise.
Academics
The most striking thing here is the trajectory. Between 2024 and 2025, math proficiency jumped from 38.7% to 49.2% — clearing the district average of about 44.7% for the first time in the data we have. ELA more than doubled, from 14.4% to 30.1%, though it still sits well below the district average of roughly 44.8%. The 2022 dip was real, but the rebound since has been sharp, especially in the upper grades: fifth-graders posted 34.9% ELA proficiency and 51.3% in math. Caveat: state test scores fluctuate year to year, and the 2025 jump is large enough to warrant a "show me next year" mindset.
Culture
Survey scores here are unusually strong. Parents give the school a 99% satisfaction mark (well above the district's 94%), teachers rate their own instruction quality at 100% (district average 90%), and parent-teacher trust hit a perfect score. The discipline picture is calm — zero suspensions in each of the last three reported years. Two things temper the optimism: chronic absenteeism runs high at 61.8%, and only 77% of teachers describe the school as safe (below the 83% district average). That gap is worth asking the principal about.
Community
The student body is overwhelmingly Hispanic (77%) and Black (21%), with smaller representation from Asian and multiracial families. Special education enrollment is 22%, meaningfully above what you see at many zoned schools, so this is genuinely a full-inclusion environment. The neighborhood census tells a familiar West Bronx story: median household income around $45,000, a third of households below the poverty line, and very low homeownership — a community where most families rent and many are working hard to make ends meet.
Neighborhood
Mount Eden-Claremont (West) is a working-class, renter-heavy stretch of the Bronx where nearly a third of residents live below the poverty line and only about 16% of adults hold a bachelor's degree. Families here are predominantly Hispanic and Black, and only 19% of households include children — meaning the school draws from a wider radius than a neighborhood full of young families would suggest. Getting around is easy by train.
Three subways are within an easy walk: the B and D at 174-175 Sts (about 4 minutes), the 4 at Mt Eden Av (about 7 minutes), and the 4 at 176 St (about 8 minutes).
