District 4 Schools
District 4 serves East Harlem with 44 schools split between traditional DOE buildings and charter networks. About three-quarters of options are zoned public schools, with charters filling out the rest — no private schools in the mix. ELL support is available at nearly half of schools, while world language programs and AP courses each appear at a handful of sites. A few schools offer STEM pathways. State test scores hover around the middle of the pack for Manhattan, and daily attendance runs solid at 88 percent. The middle school bench is thin here, and high school options lean heavily on SHSAT testing or audition-based admission.
