School SummaryDistrict 19
Among District 19 peer schools, Academy of Innovative Technology lacks a quality score for direct comparison (peers range from 74-85/100). However, its competitive admissions (11% offer rate vs. typical unscreened schools) and exceptional survey metrics suggest it's performing well above the district average in family satisfaction and climate. The zero-suspension rate is particularly notable in a district where the average is 1.56%. Without test score data, the academic comparison is incomplete, but the school appears to be a strong choice for families prioritizing trust, safety, and a supportive environment.
Test score data was not provided for this school, making it difficult to compare academic performance directly against the district average of 49% in ELA and 48% in math. However, the school's program richness score of 78.6/100 indicates a solid range of offerings including AP courses, STEM pathways, ELL support, and Spanish language instruction. The school offers a more robust set of sports (14 different teams) than most district peers, suggesting a broad approach to student engagement.
This is where the school genuinely stands out. Parent satisfaction (92%) runs slightly above the district average, but the trust metrics are exceptional: 95% parent-teacher trust and 98% parent-principal trust. Teachers report 100% instruction quality — notably above the district average of 88%. However, there's a tension in the teacher survey: while trust in the principal is 87%, collegial trust among teachers is only 66%, suggesting some division among staff. Discipline is a clear bright spot: zero suspensions in the current year, compared to a district average of 1.56%. This suggests either very effective behavior management or a different approach to conflict resolution.
The student body reflects the neighborhood's demographics: 53% Hispanic, 34% Black, 8% Asian, and 3% White, with a diversity index of 61%. Notably, 21% of students have IEPs (special education), and the economic need index is a high 75.6% — meaning three-quarters of students come from families facing economic challenges. This is a working-class community with significant needs, and the school's high parent satisfaction suggests it's serving those families well.
The school is located in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn (Highland Park-Cypress Hills neighborhood), an area with a safety score of 75.48 percentile — above average but not the safest in the city. Transit access (42.53) is moderate, and the area shows low family density (0.38) and low education orientation (0.38) in the percentile rankings. The neighborhood has elevated asthma rates (104.4 per 10,000) and some lead exposure concerns (20% elevated rate), which are health factors families should be aware of. However, the area offers access to Highland Park for recreation.
Families typically walk or take public transit to this school. The Jamaica Avenue location is accessible via bus routes, though the moderate transit score suggests commute times may be longer for some families. The area is pedestrian-friendly for local residents.
