How this is scored→

What stands out

  • Brutal admissions selectivity: 1.9% offer rate with 2,277 applicants chasing 43 seats
  • Zero suspensions school-wide — a remarkably calm climate for a 376-student high school
  • 98% family survey response rate signals an unusually engaged parent community
  • International identity with French, Spanish, and ELL support alongside AP and humanities tracks

Things to consider

  • The 1.9% offer rate means even strong applicants should line up realistic backup high schools
  • School-level proficiency and attendance data were not in this profile — ask the school directly for them
  • Teacher collegial trust at 81% is the lowest trust subscore here, drawn from only 36 teacher respondents
  • Class size of 22.9 sits at the district average — the school feels small, but class sizes aren't unusually small
  • The Kappa designation suggests a strand within a larger Knowledge and Power Prep family; clarify the relationship between campuses

Based on 2025 data

School SummaryDistrict 10

Among District 10 schools in this profile, Kappa is the only high school — the listed peer set runs from elementary standouts like P.S. 024 Spuyten Duyvil (92/100) down to Cardinal McCloskey and P.S. 207 (both 62/100), so direct score-to-score comparison is limited. Among comparable metrics, Kappa's parent satisfaction of 91% lands slightly below the district average of 94%, but its zero suspension rate sits well below the district's 0.28% — making it the standout discipline case in the district. Teacher instruction quality at 91% effectively matches the district average of 91.4%.

Academics

Steady

Specific proficiency scores for Kappa aren't included in this profile, so the strongest academic signals come from the program catalog and the demand data. AP Courses and a dedicated humanities track sit alongside ELL support and world languages (French, Spanish), with a program richness score of 65.2/100. The 1.9% offer rate — 53 applicants per seat — is itself a kind of academic reputation marker, since citywide families tend to research before they apply. District 10 averages roughly 45% ELA proficiency and 43.5% math proficiency across its schools, the kind of baseline that frames what working-class catchments in the Bronx are up against.

Culture

moderate

Day to day, this feels like a school where families are deeply in the loop — 98% of families completed the survey, parent-principal trust is at 93%, and parent satisfaction lands at 91% (a hair below the district's 94%). Teachers rate instruction quality at 91%, essentially matching the district average of 91.4%, and trust in the principal at 92%. Teacher collegial trust is the lowest subscore at 81%, though that figure comes from only 36 teacher responses versus 450 family responses, so the picture from staff is more muted than the picture from parents. The most striking climate number is zero suspensions across 376 students — unusual for a high school in a high-need catchment.

Community

The student body is 67% Hispanic, 26% Black, 4% Asian, and 2% White, with a diversity index of 47% and an economic need index of 87.4 — meaning roughly nine in ten students come from low-income households. Twenty-three percent of students are classified as IEP, and the school offers ELL support, signaling an intentional commitment to multilingual learners and students arriving with varied academic needs. The surrounding Belmont community mirrors that profile: 37.7% of residents live below the poverty line, only 3.8% own their homes, and just 13% of adults hold a bachelor's degree — a dense, working-class, predominantly renter neighborhood.

Neighborhood

Belmont

Belmont is a densely populated, working-class Bronx neighborhood where median household income is around $33,000 and about 38% of residents live in poverty. Only about 11% of households have children under 18 (a figure shaped by multi-generational and immigrant households sharing tight apartments), and just 13% of adults hold a bachelor's degree. The area is overwhelmingly renter-occupied, with most residents living in the borough's classic high-density apartment buildings near the Fordham Road commercial strip.

Families can reach the school via the B and D trains at Fordham Road (about a 10-minute walk) or Kingsbridge Road (about a 12-minute walk), with the 4 train also stopping at Kingsbridge Road about 15 minutes away.
