University Heights Secondary School

701 ST. ANNS AVENUE

At a Glance

A screened South Bronx high school where getting in is harder than fitting in.

Best suited for

College-focused students and families who want a selective public high school with a clear Humanities or STEM pathway, strong family-school relationships, and the discipline climate to match — and who are ready to navigate a competitive admissions process.

What stands out

  • Offer rates under 6% on both the Humanities and STEM tracks — extreme selectivity for a Bronx public school.
  • Perfect 100% marks across parent satisfaction, parent-teacher trust, parent-principal trust, teacher instruction quality, and teacher-principal trust — a near-unprecedented sweep on the school survey.
  • Zero suspensions, against a district average suspension rate of 0.84%.
  • A 69% family survey response rate — unusually high engagement for a city high school.
  • An unusually wide sports menu for the borough, including badminton, bowling, Double Dutch, rugby, and flag football alongside the usuals.

Things to consider

  • Admissions is the bottleneck — fewer than 1 in 18 applicants receives an offer, so strong middle school records and test prep matter.
  • The school is screened, meaning the student body is selected for college-prep readiness; this is not a neighborhood-zoned option.
  • The surrounding neighborhood has high poverty and low educational attainment, which shapes the broader community context outside the school's walls.
  • Only 29 teachers responded to the climate survey — a small sample that should temper how much weight you give any single teacher-rated number.
  • Mid-sized at 573 students, UHSS offers breadth but not the deep course catalog or extracurricular sprawl of a 2,000+ student campus.

Based on 2024-25 data

School SummaryDistrict 7

District 7 (Bronx) is home to several highly-rated charter peers — South Bronx Classical Charter School II and Leaders of Excellence, Advocacy and Discovery among them — that post overall scores in the mid-90s and set a demanding bar. As a screened public school with extreme admissions demand and standout climate marks, UHSS offers families a tuition-free, college-prep alternative to those charter options without leaving the traditional public system.

Academics

Limited data

The school admits fewer than 1 in 18 applicants to either of its two academic tracks — a level of demand that speaks to college-prep hunger in the South Bronx. The curriculum includes AP courses, ELL support, and French, with distinct Humanities and STEM pathways for admitted students. Teachers rate instruction quality at a perfect 100%, well above the district average of 88%, suggesting the adults in the building feel supported to teach rigorously. As a screened school, the student body is pre-selected for college-prep readiness, which shapes what these numbers mean.

Culture

strong

The climate numbers here are unusually clean: zero suspensions against a district average suspension rate of 0.84%, and a perfect 100% across parent satisfaction, parent-teacher trust, parent-principal trust, and teacher-principal trust — every one of those beats district averages by a wide margin. The family survey pulled a 69% response rate, high for NYC and a strong signal of engaged, connected families rather than a disengaged parent body. Teachers also rate trust in school leadership at 100%, though only 29 teachers responded — a sample worth keeping in mind rather than treating as gospel. Day-to-day, this reads as a place where families feel heard, discipline isn't the headline, and adults trust each other.

Community

The student body is predominantly Hispanic (59%) and Black (28%), with smaller Asian (7%), White (2%), multiracial (1%), and Native American (1%) populations, producing a diversity index of 56%. One in five students has an IEP, and the economic need index of 78.6 means most students come from low-income households, which closely tracks the surrounding Melrose community. Most students come from the neighborhood rather than commuting in from elsewhere, giving UHSS the feel of a true community school rather than a destination program.

Neighborhood

Melrose

Melrose is a predominantly renter neighborhood — homeownership sits at just 10% — with a median household income around $30,000 and a poverty rate over 38%. Only about 14% of neighborhood adults hold a bachelor's degree, and roughly 16% of households have children under 18, so the school draws from a relatively narrow family base in a place that's largely working-class. Even so, the median home value of nearly $366,000 signals a neighborhood under real investment pressure, which is reshaping who stays and who gets priced out. The community is young, dense, and economically stretched, but rooted.

Jackson Av (2, 5) is about a 5-minute walk, 3 Av-149 St (2, 5) about 7 minutes, and E 149 St (6) about 12 minutes — so most families are within a short walk of a subway stop.
