A career and technical education hub with strong teacher trust and zero suspensions, drawing diverse students to specialized programs in a transit-accessible but safety-concerning Brighton Beach neighborhood
Families interested in career-technical education — particularly culinary arts, IT, or health professions — who value a school with strong teacher trust, zero suspensions, and a diverse student body. Parents should be comfortable with the Brighton Beach neighborhood's safety context and willing to engage actively given the lower PTA fundraising levels. This school works well for students who thrive in a structured CTE environment and for families who prioritize relationship quality and discipline approaches over raw academic test score comparisons.
- Zero suspensions — a rare achievement in NYC public schools where district average is 0.5%
- High teacher instruction quality (94%) exceeding district average
- Strong parent trust in both teachers and principals (both 94%)
- Robust CTE program offerings with competitive admissions (culinary, IT, health professions each receive 190-210 applicants)
- 14 athletic programs including rugby, wrestling, and handball — unusually varied for a CTE school
- 36% IEP student population served with integrated support
- No academic proficiency data available in this dataset — parents cannot compare test scores to district averages
- Parent satisfaction (88%) runs below the district average of 92%
- PTA fundraising ($30/student, $17,595 total) is significantly below district average of $78.56 per student — fewer enrichment resources
- Neighborhood safety scores (31.8) are low compared to city benchmarks
- Family survey response rate of 22% suggests limited parent engagement with the school community
- As a specialized CTE school, admission is competitive but not screened — families must apply through the citywide ed-opt process

School SummaryDistrict 21
Among District 21 peer schools — which include highly-rated options like Success Academy Bensonhurst (95/100), Brooklyn School of Inquiry (94/100), and Mark Twain I.S. 239 (93/100) — Grady CTE does not have a comparable quality rating in this dataset. The peer list skews toward selective and charter options, which typically outperform district averages. Grady's value proposition is different: it's a career-technical school serving students with high economic need (78.9%) and a substantial IEP population (36%), offering pathways into growing workforce sectors rather than a traditional academic trajectory.
Academic proficiency data is not available in this dataset, so a full picture of classroom performance cannot be provided. The school offers AP courses, STEM programming, and career technical pathways in culinary arts, IT, and health professions — programs that typically prepare students for both college and workforce entry. Class sizes average 24.6 students, matching the district average exactly.
This is where Grady shines in the data. Teacher instruction quality scores 94%, slightly above the district average of 92.6%. Parent trust in teachers (94%) and principals (94%) runs high, and teacher collegial trust sits at 92%. Most notably, the school recorded zero suspensions — a stark contrast to the district average of 0.5%. The family survey response rate of 22% (132 responses) and teacher responses of 49 suggest moderate engagement with the survey process, but the numbers that are present point to a school where relationships between staff, families, and leadership are strong.
Grady's student body reflects the diversity of its district: 42% Black, 29% Hispanic, 17% white, 10% Asian, and 1% multi-racial — yielding a diversity index of 73%. With 36% of students having IEPs and an economic need index of 78.9%, the school serves a population with significant support needs. This differs somewhat from the Brighton Beach neighborhood's demographics, which skews more heavily white (though specific neighborhood breakdown isn't provided) and has a moderate 23% poverty rate. The school's pull from beyond the immediate neighborhood as a district-wide CTE option likely accounts for the demographic mix.
Brighton Beach is a transit-friendly neighborhood in southwest Brooklyn, scoring 74.71 on transit access and 74.71 on education orientation — meaning families here value schools. However, safety scores are concerning at 31.8 (percentile-ranked), with a crime density over 2,262 per area measure and elevated asthma rates (104.4 per 10,000). The median home value of $641,280 reflects Brooklyn's real estate pressures, while median household income sits at $49,254. Only 16.9% of households have children, making this a less family-dense area than many NYC neighborhoods — though the school itself draws students from across the district.
Families typically arrive via the B or Q subway lines which serve Brighton Beach, or via local bus routes. The neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly along the main commercial corridors, though parents should consider the safety metrics when planning commutes, particularly for younger students or those with evening activities.
