Origins High School

3000 AVENUE X

At a Glance

A mid-size unscreened high school with exceptional program breadth and strong family trust, located in a waterside Brooklyn neighborhood

Best suited for

Families looking for an unscreened high school with broad academic and extracurricular offerings, who value strong parent-principal communication and a calm discipline environment, and who are prepared to handle a less transit-accessible commute. The school's high economic need index (81%) suggests it serves a substantial population of higher-need families, which may appeal to parents seeking a socioeconomically diverse environment.

What stands out
  • Zero suspensions — the school has no out-of-school suspensions on record
  • Exceptional program breadth — 100/100 program richness score with strong arts, STEM, languages (including Italian, Mandarin, Russian), and 14 sports
  • Very high family trust metrics — 96% parent-principal trust and 92% parent-teacher trust
  • Moderate demand — 230 applicants for 90 seats creates a real selection process without screened admissions
  • Dedicated student support — offers ELL Support, after-school tutoring, peer mediation, and young women's/young men's groups
Things to consider
  • No test score data available — families cannot currently assess academic performance against district averages
  • Teacher-principal trust (71%) is notably lower than parent trust metrics — there may be behind-the-scenes leadership tensions
  • Very low survey response rates — only 12% of families and 27 teachers responded, so the trust numbers represent a minority
  • PTA fundraising is minimal at $1 per student ($335 total) — far below the district average of $56 per student, suggesting limited parent financial involvement
  • The neighborhood is less transit-friendly than most of Brooklyn — families should factor commute logistics

Based on 2024-25 data

School SummaryDistrict 22

Origins High School operates in District 22, where peer schools include several high-performing charters (Success Academy Bergen Beach at 89/100, Success Academy Sheepshead Bay at 86/100) and strong zoned schools like P.S. 195 Manhattan Beach (85/100). Without test score data, Origins is difficult to rank definitively, but its unscreened admissions model, strong program offerings, and zero-suspension environment position it as a distinctive option in a district with diverse school choices.

AcademicsLimited data

Test score data was not provided for Origins High School, so direct comparison to the district averages (60.9% ELA, 60.5% Math) is not possible. The school offers AP Courses and a Humanities program, along with World Languages including Italian, Mandarin, and Russian — a relatively unusual language selection for the area.

Culturemoderate

The school shows very strong trust numbers on the family side — 92% parent-teacher trust and 96% parent-principal trust are both impressive, and 88% parent satisfaction is solid though slightly below the district average of 91%. However, there's a notable split with teachers: while teacher instruction quality scores 90% (matching the district average) and collegial trust is high at 86%, teacher-principal trust drops to 71%, suggesting some tension between staff and leadership that families may not directly experience. The school reports zero suspensions, which is notably better than the district average suspension rate of 0.47%.

Community

With 420 students and an average class size of 23.9 (virtually identical to the district average of 23.8), Origins is a mid-size high school. The student body is diverse — 35% White, 25% Black, 23% Asian, 15% Hispanic — giving it a diversity index of 78%. The economic need index sits at 81.1%, indicating a significant portion of students come from higher-need households. The neighborhood surrounding the school is relatively stable with a median home value of $721,560 and a 52.8% homeownership rate, though the area has only 17.9% households with children, suggesting many residents are older couples or singles.

NeighborhoodSheepshead Bay-Manhattan Beach-Gerritsen Beach

Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach are waterfront-adjacent neighborhoods in southeastern Brooklyn, known for their quiet, residential character and some restaurant rows along Emmons Avenue. The area scores moderately for safety (59th percentile), transit (56.7), and family density (69th percentile), with strong education orientation (72%). It's more of a car-dependent area than many parts of Brooklyn — families should expect driving or longer bus commutes. The neighborhood has a moderate poverty rate of 13% and a median household income of $79,582.

This is a car-friendly neighborhood. Families without a vehicle should plan for longer commutes, as transit options are less robust here than in denser parts of Brooklyn.
